The prestigious ETR.302 "Settebello" 7-car articulated EMU
(Breda, 1953) lies abandoned in disgraceful state at Falconara Marittima, few
km north of Ancona. Three trains were built from 1952 to 1959 and were numbered
ETR.301-303. Those trains have represented the originality of the rail industry
in the years of the Italian renaissance. Their career has been truly
exceptional as was the service that was offered on the train to the most
exclusive clientele travelling between Roma and Milano. The trains, famous for
the frontal viewpoint with 8 turning seats, the luxurious furniture and the
unmistakable driver cab elevated, were put in service between 1953 and 1959.
Initially were used for fast services between Milano, Roma and Napoli then in
mid 1980s, after having run also a Milano-Roma train pairs under the brand TEE,
were downgraded to semi-fast services Venezia-Milano/Firenze and Roma-Genova.
Last services took place in early 1990s when they were used even for local
stopping services Bologna-Piacenza. ETR.301 and 303 were scrapped in mid 1990s while
ETR.302 was cannibalized (some parts being still serviceable for remaining
electric railcars ALe 601). MC
